From Sky to School
Santa Tecla, El Salvador | Design Technician
Context: In collaboration with FundaSAL and City Adapt, an initiative was undertaken to address water scarcity issues in Santa Tecla, El Salvador. The region receives an average annual rainfall of 30 inches, yet schools and residents often rely on purchased water deliveries to supplement the local supply.
Task: The objective was to mitigate the impact of water shortages during peak school periods, particularly in campus restrooms, where lack of flush water posed health and sanitation concerns for the school population.
Approach: Six rainwater capture systems were designed to harvest and store rainwater from roofs adjacent to campus restrooms, providing a reliable backup water source during periods of water scarcity. This approach aimed to reduce dependence on external water deliveries and ensure uninterrupted access to sanitation facilities.
