Tiny House, Big Dreams

Berkeley, California | First Artist and Resident

Context: In this Berkeley backyard oasis, homeowner is passionate about affordable housing, supporting local artists and growing organic food. Abundant wood trimmings and old chimney bricks on site.

Task: Designed and implemented a garden space harmonizing with homeowner's values, addressing a flooded pathway issue due to an unmanaged downspout. Repurposed wood trimmings for hugelkultur beds and bricks for landscape edges.

Approach: Implemented a water-wise home:

  • Laundry greywater irrigates citrus trees (lemon, persimmon, lime)

  • Outdoor shower water feeds blue bamboos

  • Roof runoff directed to a mulch trench pathway, generating rich soil annually (1' deep x 2' wide, local mulch)

A regenerative design blending art, sustainability, and functionality.
